Like its Cherokee and Renegade siblings, the 2017 Jeep Patriot is a very capable compact SUV that's available with a Trail Rated® badge when equipped with Jeep's Freedom Drive II® 4x4 system. The Jeep Patriot's best feature is arguably its affordability - a base model Patriot starts at only $17,895, making it perfect for entry-level off-roaders.
The 2017 Patriot has two engine options. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque; it's available only on front-wheel drive models. Fuel economy is EPA-rated at 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with a five-speed manual transmission, and 22 mpg city and 26 mpg with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The more powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder is necessary if you want four-wheel drive (4WD); it makes 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque, and mileage varies depending on whether it's configured with FWD or 4WD and the Freedom Drive off-road system.
Jeep's Freedom Drive I™ system provides active, full-time 4x4 capability with brake traction control and selectable Lock mode. It also has electronically controlled coupling that monitors wheel slippage and delivers torque to the axle that needs it most. It can even be locked 50/50 front-rear for low-speed capability and control. Freedom Drive II® adds a locking off-road model with Hill Descent Control, grade-sensing features and boosts crawl ratio for more rugged terrain.
The Patriot is available in three basic trim levels: Sport, Latitude and High Altitude. The base Sport edition of the Patriot sticks to the basics (crank windows, manual locks, cloth upholstery), but also has roof rails, foglights, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-speaker audio system. With the Latitude, you get power doors and windows, heated front seats and a power outlet. The Latitude can also be ordered with infotainment and navigation systems and 6.5-inch touchscreen. The High Altitude, meanwhile, adds niceties like a leather interior and a sunroof.
